Loughborough Beginners 2010

Loughborough beginners. – We Won!!!

A weekend of epic proportions.
This year we had fewer fresher’s than expected which meant that we only had one beginner’s team in Loughborough. This was mainly due to some Darwinist selection of the fittest at the fresher’s fair (This consisted of “You’re tall so you are going to play Frisbee!” But what a team! We started the Saturday with some very athletic guys that understood the basics really well but all got a bit too excited with the disc in their hands (I will refer to the flailing of John Corke in the Loughborough gold video at this point). We won all of our games bar one and by the end of the day we were starting to look more like a unit and less like ten guys running around in circles. Everything was coming together and we scored some great points. There were pitch length side arms coming off from the likes of Sabbot (much to the disapproval of the experienced players from other teams) and already some fantastic grabs from people throwing their bodies all over the hall for the cause. Special praise goes to C-on at this point for a very memorable layout in the endzone in the first game of his first tournament.
We finished the first day very highly seeded and brimming with confidence we showered, packed up our stuff and headed for the church hall.
With the help of my irrational over confidence and a very confused host player we managed to walk the long way to the hall, which roughly took us about eight weeks, and when we got there all of the space was full. So we spread out and ended up taking over most of the hall. We then went on a mission to find a costume for the party. In hindsight planning the costume more than a n hour in advance would have proved useful, but none the less we ended up with some beautifully John Corke hand crafted limited edition Dennis the menace costumes (red t-shirts and black duck tape). We then warmed up with some questionable drinking games, which the majority of the team struggled to grasp with Mask getting confused at every new rule and shouts of “5!” ringing out across the town.
The party was a laugh, Geth “tried” to hurdle some bike racks, fake out some lampposts and kicked off at inanimate objects numerous times. Pete through out some crazy shapes on the dance floor and the realisation of just how much of a hotdog-fest Frisbee tournaments really are slowly dawned on the new players much to the disapproval of king shark C-on. The morning was just as fn with Gethin poaching a sleeping bag and a very sleep deprived Crackers waking up and almost not smiling (Don’t worried he still can’t frown). Stockings how ever managed to have a dubiously good sleep. On to the second day and Winning!
We started off the second day kind of slow but despite getting confused and trying to steal the disc off opponents Gethins presence on the pitch kicked into action. We drew one game we should of won due to the fact that we were all hungover/ still drunk (I got stalled out before my brain registered that I had the disc). But after this we had one gear and it was go! Everyone was literally grabbing everything put up. C-on, Corke and Geth made some incredible grabs in the endzone, the m=Mask and Stockings were pulling off spectacular undercuts and the understanding and flow of everyone’s games rocketed. Confidence was also growing and the likes of Sabbott and Pete were making some great lead passes. We cruised into the semis without much trouble. We had a very special guest arrive on the Sunday who helped us in the semis. This game was tough, it was against the best of Hazes three teams and they had some really quick, good fresher’s. We struggled, but luckily super sub Medic came on and helped the heroes that were on the pitch to win the longest point of the tournament. And just like that we were through to the finals.
What a final. Like us UBU had some fantastic freshers, some of them were really tall and could jump really high. Unlike us they had Freddy Walters who is, for those who don’t know, very good. This was by far the most intense game of the weekend and full credit to every single player on our team, everyone held their nerve despite the massive crowd with even more great cuts and fantastic grabs. The game came down to a nail biting sudden death point finished by a fantastic deep cut and grab from Sabbot. Without trying to boost any ego’s I have to be honest and say that this game did not like a game at a beginners tournament and every player did themselves, the club and the university very proud. Great win well-deserved jesters. Future is looking very bright.
