Jestival 2010
Imperial College London
The first match to kickstart the weekend saw Jesters taking on Thierry, a former Jester student. I was not looking forward to this match, believing that they were going to have put in an incredibly strong side out for our first match. However this was not the same team who I had seen at regionals.
Jesters were eager to get on and show them our metal. Slowly but surely the confidence in the handlers rose and switch from short play to hucks whenever we were downwind with proto James and Sam and Pete looking long.
The match consisted of basic side arm man d from both teams and eased us into the weekend with our first win with a Callaghan scored by Cracker.
More important was the use of a 3 man sling shot as a call by Thierry. Good man!
Red
Out on the line up Pete instantly warned me of Red’s nasty zones, the narrow arrow and cup. After 5 or 6 points dealing with the zone looked impossible.. However with a cheeky tactics from Lil Chris we discovered using 3 handlers and having wings cut to the swing, we could easily begin moving the disc up the pitch.
As we reached the half we could here Red getting told off for leaving gaps in the cup. The last 3 points we forced them to change to man D. We just couldn’t seem to get our Hucks out.
Our heads never dropped even when we turned metres from their endzone.
A humbling game that would provide useful lessons for Purple cobras.
Purple Cobras
Yeah Ex- Jesters! Old met new in this little clash, which threw some fear into their eyes towards the end.
To begin with they brought out the zone using Joe as the chase. After losing the first few points we realised the handlers needed to spread out further as the cobra cup was wider than that of Red.
Cobras kept managing to increase their lead until the final minutes of the game.
Then something changed. Swings were being pulled off to perfection, with the wings cutting to the swing side and moving the disc up the pitch. We were managing to cut of the longs and score! D’s were happening with many a mac and a shouts of dismay, but eventually they found a way through with Joe to score the winning point.
Cracker made a massive layout or something and said it wasn’t worth it.
Banbury
We were in high spirits after the purple cobras said they were getting worried towards the end and a game of cups was enjoyed. This was a game we could win.
Play was incredibly chilled with the Banbury handlers sometimes releasing on 8-9 seconds of the stall count. We managed to move the disc round well and our extra experience allowed us to poach off players to cut out space and force them to dump 3 or 4 times before a decent cut was made.
A nice chilled game to win after playing cobras and Red.
Evo
I had no idea what to expect from these guys, but noticed a lot of their players were very small. It was a good to see the sport being taken up by kids as young as 12. “Give them some sherbet and they can run for England.”
This was the best game of Saturday and was unbelievably tight. We employed basic side arm man d whereas evo switched to backhand on occasion.
The play was fast, liquid Frisbee, with JJ as our main handler never leaving the pitch. We found a lot more confidence and were beginning to break their force. We were even, point for point, with our long game being untouched. Proto James, Sam and Pete were on fire! The undercuts were coming out explosive from Scotty , Selby, Dr and G.Miners hucks were HUWAGE. Jeff and Cracker got air and caused some crucial point D’s.
The final point saw at least 5-6 turns outside each of our endzones. We made a break pass down the left sideline with Pete in the endzone which was Audaciously D’d out of the air followed with cries of excitement from the sideline.
On this turn evo were kept at bay with huge forces from all the Jesters players but they slowly moved up the pitch. The forces proved to great and the pressure caused a throw away. This was it. Proto Sam busted long and a huge huck from JJ sailed over his mark for Sam to score the winning point.
A fantastic last game for Jesters to win. The spirit showed was massive with calls being sorted out quickly and politely. Both teams were determined to win and regardless of score, they both did.
I've probably missed out tons of stuff besides the scores. Feel free to add in anything. Day two up soon.
