Aye Aye Open 2008
Team: Richard J, Richard O, Ben, Haris, Greg, Cam and I.
My alarm went off at 4:45am. I got up and walked to the train station.
Everyone else arrived well within time for the 6:07 train, except for
Richard J. Anyway, the six of us got on the train and settled down.
Changed at Peterborough, carried on to Norwich. Most of us had naps,
but none of us got drawn on (possibly because everyone else was napping).
The Sportspark (as it's known) at UEA is fantastic. We should steal
it. Got told off by security though.
G1 v Hulltimate. 7-8. Went a couple of points up, but lost on sudden
death (there were no draws in the pool stages for some reason). We put
in lots of effort though, so ah well.
G2 v Bears. 2-10 (or so). They ran a lot and put a lot of pressure on
us, and had a lot of good long discs which Edd failed entirely to deal
with because he had a bit of a 'mare. Did get the two assists though,
with a scoober and a hammer.
Rich J still hasn't arrived by this point.
G3 v GoldenAye. 3-13. The host players had split into 4
reasonably-balanced teams, all with pun names based on Aye. This was
one of them. They ran really fast and threw lots of really low, really
fast discs that we couldn't stop, as well as having Fraser (who breaks
people for fun with like a 2m sidearm pivot or something). We turned
up to the game very close to late (because we were sitting around
chatting with some other guys), and got told off by security. Again.
G4 v Danger! High Voltage. 3-7 (ish). Really good effort, made them
play proper frisbee rather than their preferred (and very succesful)
tactic of massive hammers. Not that there weren't any massive hammers,
but they also threw other things as well. Cam scored off my
three-quarter-pitch-length scoober, which was fun. I just saw him
running there and pinged it, if I'd thought about it more I'd have
bailed. But hey-ho.
G5 v Brohawks. 3-6. They threw lots of hammers, to an American
receiver who looked quite a bit like Jeff. I can't remember anything
else about it.
Ben played the Fantasy Game and scored a point, so probably ended up
on positive figures.
Went to the guy's house, had KFC or curry. Watched Top Gear, some of
the rugby, and headed to the party for the rest of the rugby. The five
drinking parts of the team did a Boat Race and failed miserably.
Richard J gave up on his one and poured two thirds of his on his head.
Some of us found a TV and watched Match of the Day, including Eduardo
da Silva's ankle being destroyed. We lost Richard O, but then found
him and went home.
G6 v ThAye BrAyed (pronounced Thai Bride). 6-7. Really good effort in
every cut and on every mark. The lead kept switching around, and when
the hooter thing went they had the edge. Their three main handlers
were very good at breaking with high backhands and scoobers, and
there's only so much you can do about that. Ah well.
G7 v GangstAye. 9-6. YEAH!!! It should be noted that their main Aye
Aye Guy was JimJimJimJim, who had laid out into a wall in their first
game this morning, before getting bandaged up at the hospital and
coming back just in time for this game. He was perhaps a bit woozy,
but played through it (if gently) because he's a real man. PS. Haris
is a rapping legend.
G8 v Curve. 12-9. They were slightly older than most teams, but had
strong handlers and creative facial hair. But, our youthful energy and
quick turns kept us ahead through most of it. Richard J did a layout
hammer pull, Haris attempted a straight layout backhand, and I did a
chicken wing pull that was better than most others I'd done over the
weekend.
So we finished 21st out of 24. Greg got voted MVP, for some great
handling and pinpoint long discs. Special Mention to Richard O who was
playing in his first tournament ever and Haris in only his second, you
guys did a great job :D
Edd
PS. Red stayed for the presentations and were going to pick anything
up if we won, but as I haven't heard anything I assume we didn't get
Spirit or Party or anything. Ho-hum.
